Two people playing 13
instruments between them, Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington draw on their backgrounds in rock,
folk, electronica and classical music to create a unique sound frequently compared to early Pink
Floyd, Portishead and Kate Bush as well as contemporary composers such as Steve Reich and Philip
Glass. Described as an ”avant-garde musical utopia” they perform in their ‘musical space station’ of
instruments including guitar, bass, percussion, mandola, piano, organ, omnichord and vintage
synthesisers. Their universally applauded 2022 album Hotel Utopia went straight into the UK Rock
Chart at #13, winning Best British Album and Best Song at the USA’s Progressive Rock Awards where
Chrissy Mostyn was voted Best Female Vocalist.

THIS WINTER MACHINE was formed in 2016 by vocalist Al Winter. Influenced by everything from the
classic 'prog' bands of the '70s and '80s to rock and prog bands from later years. In 2021 she released her
debut album “Disco Lasers” alongside 10 music videos celebrating the wonders of our universe and
how we as human beings make sense of our existence through folklore legends, science and our
imagination. She performs, writes and produces with her partner Nick Burns. Her unique voice was
first recognised in the BBC’s drama Inspector George Gently, where she performed her version of
Silver Dagger which reached number 1 in the iTunes World Music Charts. This year they released their seventh album ‘The Light Of Ancient Mistakes’. “Spiky neo-prog and art-rock. The theme of the album is toxic overconfidence and excessive certainty in public life. It is now available on Spotify, Bandcamp, Youtube, Amazon, Apple and many other providers. It is available in digital formats, or as a CD with a 24 page booklet.

Any playing, sharing, playlisting etc is very helpful and greatly appreciated.

"... an album of perfection... This is an amazing album. It is not fair to compare this to music of the past, but I have to compare this to a Genesis, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway moment, for this band. Between their last album, Nostalgia for Infinity and now, The Confidence Trick; this band is setting themselves apart from their peers in the UK. This music really is full of intelligent stories and songs that challenge you to think and hopefully change your ways. Like Genesis, which made my generation consider many deep concepts while we were at the same time fully entertained. Please get this next chapter in the history of Hats Off Gentlemen. It is quite an adventure for the mind and ears" - Progressive Rock Central

I'll also be releasing 'Patterns', a new solo classical/minimalist/instrumental album on Bandcamp on 12 August. This release, my sixth solo album, is a cross between a new album (containing 30 minutes of new music) and a retrospective of some of my favourite tracks from his previous releases, and mostly consists of material not previously available on Bandcamp. It is currently available to pre-order (with 4 tracks available straight away). Due to the length of the album (almost 2.5 hours), it is currently digital only.

https://malcolmgalloway.bandcamp.com/album/patterns

I was delighted that Sid Smith selected my last solo album in his pick of the year selection for Prog magazine in 2019.

“Minimalist perfection. When I close my eyes images of Milla Jovovich spring to mind along with Blade runner, Fifth Element and other sci-fi movies. The songs are a joy to listen to. Thanks for creating another masterpiece. Malcolm Galloway is an absolute genius as what he does” – Jason Maddock (host/producer of Revolutionary Radio Show, Phonic.FM)

"I love the Oldfield vibe and the way those driving ostinatos create an almost hypnotic sense of the music driving forward and floating AT THE SAME TIME. Bravo!" Julian Haylock, classical music critic, former editor of CD Review and International Piano Quarterly, and author of acclaimed books on Mahler, Puccini and Rachmaninov.

Many thanks to everyone supporting our music, and hope you are well,

Best wishes,

I hope you are as well as possible given the odd and difficult times in which we currently live.

We are co-hosting Prog The Forest at the Fiddler's Elbow in Camden, London (UK) on Sunday 5 December 2021. It is a one day charity fundraising progressive rock festival in aid of The World Land Trust, a charity that buys threatened rainforest and other vulnerable habitats to be preserved in trust, working with local people to ensure a long term future for these vital parts of the ecosystem on which we all depend. Our fundraising for the charity has in total so far raised enough for them to protect 11 acres.

The event will showcase the diversity of modern progressive rock and related genres.

Bands in order of appearance; timings are approximate and may be subject to change

1.45 CAROLA BAER - The Ruby Dawn and ex Quiet Wish singer/keyboardist will open the festival with a solo appearance, performing her hypnotic ambient rock with a social conscience

2.30 WARMRAIN - Voted no2 in Prog magazine readers’ poll of top unsigned prog bands

3.30 JO QUAIL - internationally acclaimed composer and virtuoso cellist. She combines an eloquent mastery of her instrument with innovative looping techniques, producing complex, evocative music, equally appreciated by classical and progressive audiences alike. Jo won the Limelight Award at the Prog Magazine Awards in 2019

4.40 CODICES - not quite math rock, not quite post rock, with big chaotic riffs and careful deliberations in equal measure. Their new album ‘Vivid’ was released on the 15th October, which they plan to play in full on the day

EVENING SET:

7.00 JOHN ETHERIDGE - the legendary Soft Machine guitarist joins forces with the sensational vocals of Vimala Rowe; together they weave a magical spell, effortlessly travelling musically from India to Africa, Middle East and the USA.

7.55 HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT'S ADEQUATE - Prog magazine Limelight feature artists, fusing alt/prog-rock and electronic elements with science and science fiction, recommended by Steve Hackett.

9.15 THE FAR MEADOW - "outstanding music, topped with superb female vocals, sounds as adventurous Neo Symphonic Rock, highly recommended!" Prog Archives

LIVE MUSIC WILL FINISH BY 10.30pm

Accompanied children are welcome until 6pm. Due to licensing requirements the venue is 18+ after 6pm

In other news we'll be releasing a new album next year - The Confidence Trick. The theme of the album is the harm caused by our tendency to mistake confidence for competence. Recording of this album is almost finished - one vocal and one flute part left to record, some mixing, and then mastering and pressing. We're also delighted to be returning to Hard Rock Hell's Prog festival, and making our first in person appearance at the Breaking Bands festival in 2022.

Obviously, viral events then overtook the plans - apologies for the inconvenience.

It's not a pleasant time for most of us at the moment. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this horrible pandemic, and those working so hard to protect others and keep vital services going. We look forward to being back out gigging as soon as safely possible. Meanwhile we are continuing work finishing off our sixth album, and sending a big virtual hug to all those struggling at this difficult time.

They also get a 24 page booklet in PDF format, which explores the songs and the themes of the album and an essay on the Ark Royal and my grandfather's experiences in the Fleet Air Arm in the Second World War.

We are very excited by how this album has turned out. As is usual for us, the songs very in style across the album, while exploring a common theme. We go from almost ambient to almost metal, with the centre of gravity being progressive rock. This album has the fragility of civilisation as its central topic. Several of the tracks were inspired by novels by the science-fiction author Alastair Reynolds.

The album includes Ark and Chasing Neon from our most recent EP, which received very supportive coverage in the media -
“Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate “Ark” is nothing short of a brilliant masterpiece that depicts a truly remarkable piece of World War 2 history. I am in awe of its magnitude and of its glory. The epic splendour and tragedy of war is depicted here through the musicianship and the storytelling of Malcolm Galloway, Mark Gatland, and company. The soundtrack is absolutely stunning...some of the best music I have ever heard. It takes you upon the journey of The Ark Royal from its first inception to its ill fated sinking.

I was left feeling as if I had been to a powerful and thought provoking movie after finishing “Ark”. “Ark” is breathtaking in every sense of the word. Once again, my hat is off to the band for creating something that is truly special and for sharing a part of history that will forever be remembered in this moving musical testament!” – Lee Miller, Bandwagon Network Radio

“… that love and attention to detail is more than apparent in the music. A dense, near twelve minute prog rock epic wonderfully illustrates the awe, tension and unavoidable loss that no doubt many active soldiers saw during that time. The anthemic piano and guitar melodies in the first movement of the piece captures that feeling of soaring above the clouds aboard a plane, and is a genuine joy to listen to. The more rock driven sections serve to rack up the tension, before concluding with a borderline tear jerking variance of the intro piano line. If you compare the start and the end of this track, one can see how far of a musical journey HOGIA have taken the listener on, and doing all that with just instrumentation is truly commendable. In all Ark is an emotional and historic musical journey.” – Astral Noize

“…Spanning from soaring Pink Floyd-like soundscapes, and more abstract passages that would sound right at home on a King Crimson record”… “Galloway/Gatland master both the classic style of progressive rock, as well as that with a more modern approach”… “strong Marillion (with Hogarth) influences… the contrast is heavenly.” … “they prove to be a very dynamic ensemble with ability to discover and explore new directions in their music... This British duo can create vibrant and texturally varied music with tons of atmosphere… I feel that HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT'S ADEQUATE's music has the kind of integrity that should make them stand out in the crowd of creators of artistic rock music. 10/10 Stars” – Subterranean Rock

"Literally left us amazed... complete musical versatility... travels between prog and neoprog and that subtle classicism that distinguishes the duo" … "Imbued with Marillion influences but totally personalised by these fine musicians." … "Don't miss it." – Psychanprog (Italy)

We are a small independent band, releasing music through our own nano-label (basically me and my laptop) without an advertising budget. If you like what we do, anything you can do to encourage friends to give our music a try is very much appreciated, as are listens/playlisting or streaming sites, requests to request shows, and coming along to live shows. We've got lots of exciting discussions about possible bookings elsewhere going on at the moment, and currently have shows this year in London, Edinburgh, Sussex, and in the Midlands.

Hope you are well and thanks for all your support

Malcolm

(Vocals, various instruments, and producer - Hats Off Gentlemen It's Adequate)
Hats Off Gentlemen It's Adequatetag:hatsoffgentlemen.com,2005:Post/60720232019-12-23T00:00:00+00:002019-12-23T11:48:40+00:00Nanobotoma

We’ve just about finished a new song ‘Nanobotoma’ for our 5th Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate (HOGIA)’s 5th album (promotional snippet above).

The story behind the song is something like this…

The protagonist has a slowly progressive but incurable leukaemia. They are a scientist working on medical self-replicating nanobots, tiny machines that are designed to identify and destroy cancer cells. Unfortunately, as they built to self-replicate, there is an inherent Darwinian selective pressure on them escape the regulatory controls with which they were created.

In the story, the protagonist initially feels much better, but then starts to notice signs that the nanobots are proliferating out of control, becoming a mechanical cancer (nanobotoma – a term that as far as I am aware I’ve invented; I couldn’t find it on Google).

A nanobotoma that is restricted to one host is an evolutionary dead end. The protagonist is supposed to be in isolation during the medical trial of the device, but he noticed that the nanobots are affecting his behaviour. They have evolved to be transmissible by respiratory secretions, and are making him feel uncontrollably lonely, making him want to be physically close to people (which would help spread the nanobot tumour to other hosts.

I’m not saying the science of the story is likely to happen, but wearing my former consultant neuropathologist hat, I would say it is not implausible. I believe that there should be an international regulatory framework to oversea any use of self-replicating nanobots, and given the time taken to achieve international agreements, we would be better of pre-empting this situation rather than waiting to respond reactively in the future.

With retrospectoscope in hand

It may seem obvious now

But remember I was dying at the time

And that can be quite distracting

Was I supposed to know they’d learn to fly on breath?

That my machines could escape the quarantine

These tiny machines, spreading through me, dividing me. These tiny machines, spreading through me. Supposed to be saving me.

The cancer hunters spread

I’ve not felt like this for years

Small victories heap, the pile becomes a turning tide

I don’t mention the sparkle in the spit, that I flush down the sink.

I hide the silver fleck just beneath the skin, I don’t want to give in.

These tiny machines, spreading through me, dividing in me. These tiny machines, spreading through me, dividing me.

Out of control, regulation disengaged. No thought for the whole, you evolved, became worse than the disease.

I should have clamped down on the hope. I can’t stand the isolation. I need someone to hold.

IT

Beginning life as a psychedelic, multi-media group, IT is a band with a colossal sound that shakes the bones, with a barrage of images that feeds the mind. IT’s sound fuses the classic melodies of prog rock’s past with a passion and intensity usually only found in punk or metal bands. Politics, religion, war and sexuality all come under the band’s lens for critical examination.
The Tirith are a Classic Prog Rock band playing original material, this is song based Rock, often described as Power Prog, and more guitar based than most. The band has a long history...; but the present band reformed in 2010 and has been playing festivals and selected gigs since 2011. The band is known for playing a wide variety of music within the Rock / Progressive genre and beyond. If you like guitar based rock come and see Tim Cox riffing it up.
The main writers in the band are Tim Cox and Richard Cory, the band being fronted by Richard Cory on vocals and bass. The Tirith feature the stunning guitar playing of Tim Cox, Tim fashions melodic solos and has been described by Geoff Barton of Classic Rock Magazine as evoking the spirit of Gary Moore with his delicious solos and punchy power chords. The lineup is completed by Carl Nightingale on drums.

The music can be described as a fusion of Styx-like pomp rock with bluesy prog. Rock with a hard crust and a deep tremor in its heart. The bands influences are many but suffice to say if you like Rush, Styx, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Opeth you will like this.

In the past The Tirith have appeared at The Cambridge Rock Festival, Danfest 2 and Danfest 4 (Leicester), Resonance Festival and HRH Prog VI. In 2018 they appear at Fusion Festival in Stourport. They have also supported Focus, The Enid, Gnidrolog, and Karnataka.

The Wood Demons

The Wood Demons draw their inspiration from the eclectic spirit of the first wave of progressive bands. Their atmospheric brand of epic prog-psychedelia combines powerful tunes interwoven with many influences – molten psychedelic guitar rock, classical violin, acid-folk, space-rock, modal jazz, film music.

In a Wood Demons song, you’re never far from a stirring melody, a poignant (or deranged) lyric or an instrumental passage that spirits you off into the stratosphere.

“The arrangement and the performance of the musicians are excellent. The album debuts with "The Other Side", which with its psychedelic atmosphere and McCartney-esque vocal is very close to the Beatles. "Caught In The Drift Of An Idle Day" recalls The Byrds. "Indian Summer" with a Mellotron background and an engaging but interesting rhythm that reminds me of the Beatles’ psychedelic period. My two favorite pieces are "All Alone In Istanbul" for its Floydian side (Animals period) and its superb progressive guitar solo, and "Poor Traumatised You", a very nice song with beautiful electric violin and Mellotron. … “.
My new classical minimalist album 'Social Astronomy' has just come out this morning. Over 75 mins or gradually and subtly changing instrumental lines leading to emergent patterns. Either relaxing and mindfulness enhancing, or horrendously irritating depending on your personal aesthetic.

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, and a reminder that truth still matters. It is hard to engage with vast statistics of people killed because of their background, colour, religion, sexuality, political views, or disability. It is easier to ignore or pretend uncomfortable facts don't exist, or are exaggerated. But every statistic is made up of real individual people.

Those that lie do not necessarily expect people to believe their lies. But by creating a culture in which lying is expected, it becomes easier to ignore the truth, and dismiss anything that doesn't fit our pre-conceived beliefs.

Every person is unique. We don't choose where we are born, or what we look like. By all means judge people on their actions, but not by the group they come from. This is easier said than done of course. We have millions of years of evolution training us to fear and hate 'them', and those who advance themselves by feeding that fear. At a neurobiological level, we categorise people into 'us' and 'them', and shut down our empathy for 'them'. It takes a conscious effort to fight that instinct, to break down the barriers between us and them.

It is far too easy to let the thin veneer of civilization slip away, but it is worth fighting for. For all those who died, for those still dying, and for those whose fate has yet to be decided. Holocaust Memorial Day. Never forget.

Prog Album of The Year 2015 – Beastie’s Rock Show.

It is an incredible honour to be considered on the same shortlist as some of prog rocks most inspiring musicians, including David Gilmour, Riverside, Steve Wilson and Spocks Beard. To actually win is gob-smacking.

“I love this album. When I listen to this album it pleases me no end, and not only does it please me in so many different ways, when I listen to the vocal it really does stir me and moves me incredibly. This album is wonderful. I want everyone to listen this on repeat, put your headphones on and get no distractions, just listen. It really does stir you, wake you up. And when he implores you with those lyrics, how can you turn that down? It is incredible, you can feel that emotion in that one line ['as I walk into the sun, carry me']. And for me that is the difference between this album and those other albums [David Gilmour, Spocks Beard, Steve Wilson, Riverside]. If you can’t make a connection with this, then I’m sorry, you can’t make a connection with music, because I love everything about this track, love this album, love this variety. That’s what progressive rock is all about – pushing the boundaries. It’s a wonderful thing and I have returned to it many times.” Steve Beastie.

Yesterday could easily have felt largely wasted - I spent the morning going to a hospital for a clinic appointment that turned out to have been cancelled.

I had arrived a bit early, so browsed the Welcome Institute's bookshop while waiting for the alleged clinic appointment. In my non-musical, non-film making life I teach medical students and postgraduate medical trainees. One of the topics that interests me is the philosophy of disease, the psychology of diagnosis, and communication in medicine. As I browsed, I noticed a slim volume - Susan Sontag's 'Illness as metaphor'. This isn't a new book - the now deceased author had first published the essay that makes up the bulk of this book in 1977 - but it retains a distinctive and fresh outlook on disease.

Her central argument is that using disease as a metaphor (for example the Romantic image of tuberculosis in 19th century opera) or the use of metaphors in our description of disease (such as the military metaphors in the war against cancer) are dangerous. Dictatorships have justified the use of violent repression using the metaphor of cutting out the cancer in our society, and it could be argued that the medical profession at times has been total waging war on a malignant enemy, focusing on cure at all costs, regardless of the costs of friendly fire.

Susan Sontag had breast cancer at the time of writing the book. This however is not a description of her personal experiences. It has an austere, impersonal, elegant intellectual rigor. It's lack of sentimentality is bold and, to me, engaging. Some of the medicine may have slightly dated, but the overall message, that we should be aware of how the metaphors we use shape our thinking, is still a profound challenge our use of language. Highly recommended to those interested in medicine or how language shapes our view of the world.

We've had our first review for 'Head In A Jar'. I'm delighted that Welsh Connections liked it. 'Chaotic excess and ultimate beauty' - I'd sign up for that :-)

Hats Off Gentlemen It's Adequate : Head In A Jar (2014).

We've long been admirers of Malcolm Galloway's work with Hats Off and this EP release does nothing to change that view. It's an eclectic mix of tunes which transport you from soothing ambient moods through to an organic climax of sound in four short tracks.
Opening with the gentle 'Broken Wave' which ebbs and flows taking you to the Floyd-esque 'Glass Lithium' which could sit quite nicely on a Rick Wright album with it's haunting refrain and melody. The title track increases the pace and energy and we get out first, of two, vocals. 'Head In A Jar' pays homage to New York's Talking Heads with the punchy vocals and guitar work building up to the climatic 'Maggie's Farm' finishing with chaotic excess and ultimate beauty. If you've not experienced Hats Off Gentlemen It's Adequate, it's about time you did and this EP could be the perfect way to do it !
